Zechariah’s song

Yesterday was the third Sunday of Advent and we turned with Shaggy to Zechariah's song. As we thought about how many of our best laid plans had been cancelled, postponed or moved online in 2020, we were able to see how this feeling of disappointment was also felt by Zechariah. Looking to a promise of a great ruler to come, but instead seeing godless empire after godless empire as well as bearing the weight of not being able to have children, you would think that this song would be one of lament. However, Shaggy showed us how Zechariah is able to rejoice because the 'Lord has visited His people!'

With the words of 'Santa Claus is coming to town' bringing a certain level of hope and excitement to children (and some adults!) at this time of year, we saw how Jesus visiting his people meant a King coming to serve us, to clean up our hearts and our lives. In this passage we see Zechariah rejoicing in a King who came to redeem, rescue and forgive, and a King who came to stay. When the Lord visits us he serves us, blesses us and he changes us, enabling us to do things that are only possible with and through Him.

Our plans for Christmas might be uncertain, but God's plan was absolutely certain and came in a new born baby, to seek and save the lost. We can be joyful and expectant that Jesus will visit us not only this Christmas, but every day that we choose to 'prepare Him room' in our hearts.🏡
