Christmas Food Waste

Christmas is such a wonderful time for all. As Christians, we get time to reflect and be thankful for all that we have and all that Jesus has done for us. Unfortunately, alongside our many traditions comes a lot of waste - up to 30% more than any other time of the year. Food is a large part of this.

66% of people admit to buying too much food at Christmas - a lot which ends up in the bin. With a world going hungry and the cost of living increasing, many people won’t see the pleasure of plentiful cupboards and have more food than is needed.

The bible says: And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.” John 6:12

This made me think, what can we do to ensure we gather our leftovers and ensure nothing is lost? Could we share extras with our friends and family? Donate food to our local charity or food bank? Cook an extra portion and share it with our vulnerable neighbours?

Giving is a huge part of our faith so let’s make sure that the excitement of Christmas doesn’t change that giving to greed. May God be seen through our generosity and kindness over this holiday period.
